Frequently Asked Questions:

What style of Yoga do we teach at BYC?  We teach Hatha Yoga in the Iyengar tradition, developed by Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar, one of the worlds most acclaimed yoga masters. Iyengar’s method, rooted in the Ashtanga (Eight-Limbed) philosophy of Patanjali, is a form of hatha yoga (yoga of willpower). This approach is grounded in the deep knowledge of optimal body alignment. The alignment principles are presented thoroughly to ensure safety in the poses and create balance in the body. One of Iyengar’s major innovations is in the use of props. Today it is quite common to see blankets, blocks, straps, pillows, chairs, and bolsters being used in yoga studios. The use of these props is comparatively new in the history of yoga and comes directly from Iyengar. The purpose of the props is to assist the student in attaining ideal alignment, thus allowing them to have experiences that they wouldn't be able to otherwise. This allows every unique individual to comfortably receive the powerful effects of yoga in the body, mind, and spirit

What do I need to bring to class?
Most importantly, bring an open mind.
For hygienic reasons, we recommend that you purchase your own sticky mat and bring it to class. The studio does provide mats if needed as well as all other props for your use.
For your comfort wear nonrestrictive clothing. Please avoid baggy pants, as they obscure alignment.
Come with an empty stomach or eat lightly no less than two hours before class.
As a consideration of other students, please avoid perfume, and turn your cell phones off during class.
Please be on time, and enter the yoga room quietly.
